Cool in Blue (jewelry and style guide)

Cool as a cucumber, calm as the tides, the color blue in jewelry is a total vibe. Cheesy rhyme scheme aside, the tranquil dazzling light show that shines off of a blue gemstone’s facets is truly extraordinary. If blue is your favorite color, you know exactly how beautiful this color can be. Just imagine your favorite color but on a luxurious diamond or a dazzling sapphire, these colors are truly something you want to take part in for your everyday attire. Not only are blue gemstones perfect for casual outfits they make amazing wedding and engagement rings. As a bonus, there are a lot of naturally grown blue gemstones out there that have zero artificial treatments to give them their blue color. Granted there are plenty of gorgeous blue gemstones that are either lab-grown or heat-treated to look even bluer. However, having many options on both sides of the spectrum is certainly nice. In this article, you will learn about the different blue jewelry options and how to wear them.

The Blue Stones:

Blue Diamond:

Blue diamond is practically the rarest diamond you can ever purchase, with only a whopping 0.02 percent of mined diamonds coming up blue. The only other diamond with a rarer occurrence is the red diamond with only 30 red stones ever being mined. In other words, the blue diamond is the rarest variety that is plausible to get your hands on. We are not assuming you can't afford a red diamond but let's just say they cost way more than a house and that's an understatement. Unfortunately, at Dunkin’s Diamonds we don't carry red diamonds, but we do have some of the best blue diamonds on the market. GIA certified and absolutely stunning to look at, the blue diamond is the definition of quintessential beauty. A diamond's insurmountable ability to shine brilliantly really enhances the blue colors of the stone. Out of the many blue gemstones out there blue diamond is certainly the flashiest and the fanciest.

Wearing blue diamond: a blue diamond works perfectly for wedding rings. It's hands down one of the best options for anyone looking to get married in elegance. Obviously, there is something supernaturally gorgeous about the blue coloration in a diamond that enhances a wedding dress by a thousand levels, what else would explain its allure. Blue diamonds are straight out of a fairy tale so why not wear them to the closest fairy tale experience we have, weddings! You can also wear blue diamonds as statement pieces, such as on a bracelet or on a necklace. Additionally, blue diamond’s look great with classic translucent diamonds. The crystal-clear transparency of classic diamonds enhances the blue color of a blue diamond making it look even bluer!

What to wear a blue diamond with. The best outfits for blue diamonds have to be wedding dresses, but this is just a personal opinion. There are probably infinite “best ways” to wear a blue diamond, however, we believe that is exactly what makes it so exceptional. From everyday parties, bat mitzvahs, anniversary, or bridal showers the stone works in every scenario and every style. Plus, if you are worried if your blue diamond will be “too blue” for some of your outfits you can always get a blue diamond with less blue pigmentation. Blue diamonds have so many sizes, colors, and styles you certainly will find something you adore.

Blue Sapphire:

The mystical and famous blue sapphire is such a wonderful and completely natural gemstone. As the most popular sapphire out there it certainly has seen time in the spotlight among famous actors and singers. There is so much to unpack when it comes to the many colors of sapphire, but blue sapphire is straightforward, gorgeous, and the most accessible sapphire variety on the market.

How to wear blue sapphire: blue sapphire can be used with any jewelry type or style. This is due to the fact that they are very durable stones scoring a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. Knowing how tough they are should allow you to move freely without fear of ruining it in the daily hustle and bustle.

What to wear Blue Sapphire with: As the article title suggests, blue sapphires are cool, and they also look cool in almost every get-up. But how to make the most of your blue sapphire jewelry? Well for starters blue looks great with even more blue! If you have a lovely light blue dress that you have always wanted to wear a blue sapphire pendant will turn that dress into the talk of the town. Dark blue outfits are the most common color worn in tandem with blue sapphire. This is because precious blue sapphires are a deep and rich royal-blue hue. However, any blue or even teal color will look exceptional.

Aquamarine:

We are almost positive you haven't seen a cleaner gemstone in your life. Aquamarine is the epidemy of tranquil, clean, and chill. It's definitely one of our favorites and the coolest-looking blue gemstone in this category. Aquamarine literally translates to “water of the sea” and looks like it was harvested from the ocean's pure chill essence. The Aquamarine gemstone is like a movie, even if you don't plan on watching the film it's something everyone needs to see eventually.

How to wear aquamarine: You can wear aquamarine anyway you want we’re not going to stop you. However, our suggestion is that you wear it as a ring or a pendant. The perfect pellucidity of aquamarine makes for a great wedding or engagement ring. A ring bright, blue, and flawless like a gorgeous set of blue eyes.

What to wear aquamarine with: if the stone is super clean and flawless, you probably are thinking you have to wear something just as perfect as the stone. If you thought this, you are only partly right. Firstly, you are already perfect so hush, secondly Aquamarine being free of inclusions and imperfections actually looks its best next to the more rustic outfits out there. Something about the contrast between worn-out and clean makes the pairing work so well. Lastly, you can wear fancy clean button-up shirts with aquamarine, and it will still fit the vibe.

Turquoise:

Calling Upon all December babies! Turquoise is the “coolest” birthstone out of the 4 options that December babies have. Some are so jealous, imagine having options for your birthstone. Regardless, December babies only need one option, and it's the best option, Turquoise. Turquoise is a very unique blue gemstone on the list because it is super smooth and opaque. Because of its abnormal appearance, some people don't even realize it's a gemstone. We mean we get it, it does kind of look like a super fancy rock. No matter what you call it we’re still buying.

How to wear turquoise: Most often you see turquoise being worn in the maximalist style. In other words, people usually wear it in very large sizes. Styles include but are not limited to large wrist bracelets and huge beaded necklaces. If you like the color blue, then you should consider turquoise because it's worn in a big and bold way. Though turquoise is also versatile, just as it can be worn wonderfully in large sizes it looks just as good in small amounts. Tiny single-stone turquoise bracelets look great, and you can even decorate a whole hand with smaller stones. Try a ring stacking style with a bunch of turquoises and you won't regret it

What to wear turquoise with: Turquoise looks great with contrasting-colored outfits and jewelry. Clothes like coral dresses or bright yellow gowns might be the way to go with this stone. The contrast makes for a nice modern design and can really make a statement in a room. They are also classy and can be worn to job interviews and work functions without the fear that they are “too much”. Well, actually it depends, probably don’t wear hundreds of excess turquoise stones to an important job interview no matter how cool you think they are.

Blue tourmaline:

Tourmaline is a lesser-known gemstone made out of an intricate silicate of boron and aluminum. Tourmaline actually comes in a large array of colors like many other stone species do. In fact, tourmaline used to be confused for emerald or sapphire because of all the different colors it has. It wasn't until the 1700s that society finally recognized tourmaline as its own gem species, the stones just looked too familiar to other gemstones to the naked eye. Furthermore, these gemstones are actually so colorful and similar to other gemstones that “tourmaline” stems from the Sinhalese word “turmali” which translates to mixed stones. Additionally, if you are an October baby this is your alternative birthstone to opal!

How to wear blue tourmaline: Wearing tourmaline is a matter of choosing what you want. There are so many different colors of tourmaline it almost goes infinite with the many different shades and tints of each color. However, since this article is about blue tourmaline we recommend wearing blue tourmaline as rings, pendants, or earrings. Blue tourmaline comes in 100s of different variations so you are totally going to find a way to fit it in your outfit. That's why necklaces and earrings are the way to go. You can easily throw it on to enhance your outfit and style.

What to wear blue tourmaline with: Since tourmaline looks surprisingly similar to higher-end gemstones you can wear the same outfits as you might for blue diamond and sapphire. Read more about how to make those pairings in the sections above.

Blue Topaz

Although topaz is usually seen as a lovely orangy-yellow color, the blue variety of topaz has recently become the most popular color on the market. Its popularization has to do with blue topaz’s association with love and loyalty. These two factors make it a perfect engagement ring for any couple looking to start their next chapter off strong.  Surprisingly all topaz gemstones usually start off as a faintly blue or yellow gemstone before they get their full color throughout their growth cycle. But the gemstones that stay blue and get even bluer in their formation process are truly gorgeous to look at. Plus, if you were born in November, you will be happy to know that this is your birthstone and even though you can choose any color of topaz, the blue one is definitely the “coolest”.

How to wear topaz: Topaz looks adorable when worn in small sizes. However, when we say “wear it small” we don't mean that the stone should lack attention, in fact we mean the opposite. Small heart-shaped stud earrings for example are a great way to use a small amount of blue topaz to make big statements. It's a way of us saying that less it more when it comes to blue topaz. You can also pair the blue topaz main stone with smaller diamond side stones to give the piece that extra flair. At Dunkin’s Diamonds, we provide a large array of options that combine these two stones into beautiful settings for you to purchase and take home.

What to wear blue topaz with: you can wear blue topaz with the same type of outfits you would for blue tourmaline, diamond, and sapphire. They are all gorgeous blue stones; the differences are in the smaller details.
